Mookaite is a fossiliferous sedimentary rock, formally occurring within the Windalia Radiolarite formation. This formation comprises varicoloured radiolarian siltstone, siltstone, and chert, which is commonly porcellanized at outcrop. Locally, casts and imprints of ammonites are present, with the casts being phosphatized in some areas.
